The one multiplication behind every conversion

Everything on this page is a single identity. With rr the hourly rate, hh the hours per week, and ww the paid weeks per year:

The product h×wh \times w is the hours you actually work in a year — 2,080 on the standard 40-hour, 52-week schedule. Every other figure is a packaging choice on the same total: the weekly paycheck is r×hr \times h, the biweekly is double that, and the monthly and semi-monthly figures divide the annual total evenly by 12 and 24, the way salaries are actually paid. The daily figure assumes a five-day work week, so a 40-hour week is an 8-hour day.

The monthly column is where rounding appears: $20 an hour is $3,466.67 a month, and $25 is $4,333.33 — the calculator shows them to the dollar as $3,467 and $4,333. That is not an error; it is the 12-way split of a total that was never a round monthly number to begin with.

Annual to hourly: the rate hides inside the salary

Run the identity backwards and the hourly rate stops being obvious, because the same salary implies wildly different rates at different schedules:

Read this table as a warning about comparing offers: a $60,000 salary on a 35-hour week pays $32.97 an hour, more than a $62,400 salary on a 45-hour week, which works out to $26.67. The bigger annual number is the smaller job. Salaried exempt positions quietly absorb extra hours at a falling effective rate, and this is the calculation that makes the absorption visible — enter the real hours, not the contracted ones, if the goal is an honest rate.

The weeks-per-year input is the one most people leave at 52, and it is the one that most often should not be. Teachers on nine-month contracts, seasonal workers, and anyone taking unpaid leave works a shorter paid year, and the annual figure should say so:

The weekly column never moves — a paid week is $30 × 40 hours whether the year contains 52 of them or 48 — while the annual and monthly figures fall. That asymmetry is the whole point: two unpaid weeks cost $2,400 a year, and a monthly budget built on $5,200 runs $200 a month short of nothing — it simply no longer matches the year you are actually working. The 40-hour week is a convention, not a law. Part-time and compressed schedules convert the same way, and the daily column adapts because it is derived from the weekly hours:

The 37.5-hour row is the standard UK and much-of-Europe full-time week, and it shows how much the 40-hour assumption quietly changes: $30 an hour on a 37.5-hour week is $58,500, not $62,400 — $3,900 a year that exists only in the gap between the two conventions. The daily figure tracks the schedule automatically: 7.5-hour days at $30, 9-hour days at $25.

Where the assumptions break

  • No overtime. The model multiplies the straight-time rate by every hour, but US non-exempt employees earn 1.5× past 40 hours a week. A 45-hour week at $25 is not $1,125 in a real paycheck; it is $1,187.50 with the overtime premium. The straight-time figure is a floor, not a forecast.
  • Gross pay only. Taxes, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions, and insurance premiums are all downstream of this calculator. The take-home pay calculator is the next step once the gross figure is settled.
  • Even periods. Monthly pay is modeled as the annual total ÷ 12 and semi-monthly as ÷ 24. True biweekly pay arrives 26 times a year, so two months a year contain three paychecks — a budgeting rhythm the flat monthly number does not show.
  • The daily figure assumes five workdays. A four-day compressed week of 40 hours is 10-hour days; at $30 an hour the model reports the five-day figure of $240 a day, where the actual per-day pay is $300.
  • Rates are assumed flat. No shift differentials, tips, commissions, or mid-year raises. If your rate changes across the year, convert each stretch separately or use a weighted average.

None of this makes the conversion wrong — it makes it a gross, straight-time number, which is the correct starting unit for every other money decision.
