Projections are not predictions
Every long-horizon projection on this site applies a constant rate of return to a straight line. Real markets do not behave that way. A calculator showing a 7% average return does not mean any given year will return 7%, and the order in which good and bad years arrive materially changes outcomes for anyone drawing a balance down. Past performance does not indicate future results.
Assumptions built into the calculators
Unless a page states otherwise, every tool assumes the following:
- Interest compounds monthly and contributions are made at the end of each month.
- The rate of return is constant across the entire horizon.
- Figures are shown before tax. Interest, dividends, and capital gains are taxable in most jurisdictions and reduce real outcomes.
- No account fees, fund expense ratios, platform charges, or transaction costs are deducted.
- Contributions are never missed, reduced, or withdrawn early.
- Inflation adjustments, where offered, use a single constant rate that you supply and may not reflect your personal cost of living.
- All amounts are in United States dollars.
These simplifications are what make a calculator usable. They also mean the output is a planning midpoint, not a number to build an irreversible decision on.
Accuracy and errors
We check each calculator against independently computed reference values before publication, but we make no warranty that the tools are error-free or that any result is accurate for your circumstances.
